Lesson 17, Prevention of dental disease. Oral hygiene

Learning objective: to study the goals and objectives facing dentistry, prevention of oral diseases.

Prevention is a system of state, social, hygienic, medical and personal measures aimed at ensuring a high level of health and prevention of bodily harm. According to the WHO classification, it is common to subdivide prevention into primary, secondary and tertiary.

The primary role in prevention is played by medical and hygienic aspects. Of particular importance is the primary prevention of diseases - a system of social, medical, hygienic and educational measures aimed at preventing the disease by eliminating the causes and conditions for its occurrence and development, as well as increasing the resistance of the body to the effects of adverse factors occurring in the natural, industrial and household environment. Primary prevention is designed to protect unaffected health; it is the most effective in medical, social and economic terms, and therefore must play the leading role in health care. Primary prophylaxis is of etiological nature (etio-tropic), i.e. it is aimed at eliminating the cause of disease; it is also pathogenetic, which means affecting the various links in the development of diseases. Thus, the availability of fundamental knowledge about the causes and ways of the development of the disease is a necessary prerequisite when developing their primary prevention. The main methods of prevention of dental diseases can be divided into 3 areas.

► I. General health improvement.

► II. Measures aimed at reducing the effect of pathogenic factors in the oral cavity.
