Foreword

As an academic subject, organic chemistry not only plays a leading role in chemical education, but is also included into the list of academic subjects for the pharmaceutical specialty and several new specialties, such as medical biochemistry, medical biophysics, bioengineering, bioinformatics, biotechnology. A course of organic chemistry is important in forming a natural scientific foundation at the molecular level learning and mastering of medico-biological and pharmaceutical academic subjects: biological, pharmaceutical, and toxicological chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, technology of dosage forms, etc. All these factors determine the significance of developing educational literature in compliance with high scientific and curricular standards.

It is impossible to imagine active implementation of progressive methodological technologies (including multimedia and IT) providing the realization of competence-oriented educational programs into the training process and performance assessment without a bank of corresponding modern academic literature. Therefore, it was essential to develop a new-generation textbook with compact presentation of the most important content of organic chemistry aimed at forming general cultural and professional competencies in students of pharmacy and related specialties.

In this textbook, the general strategy of the organic chemistry course is based on fundamental provisions and laws of chemical behavior of organic compounds. Studying the multitude of organic compounds with relation to their typical reactivity is systematized specifically using this basis, dictated by professional objectives of functional analysis of medicinal substances.

To study the main chemical patterns, organic substances, many of which are medicinal products or their sources, have been used as appropriate objects. The choice of factual material aims to establish the relation between the structure and properties of organic substances, which will subsequently form the basis for performing professional functions like providing for drug stability, compatibility of drugs, etc.
